The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Andrew Hamilton,

Update to all supporters of the Cecil Appeal

July 31, 2015 :  We are amazed and overwhelmed by the outpouring of support for Oxford's Wildlife Conservation Research Unit (WildCRU) and the sadness expressed over the death of Cecil the lion. Jimmy Kimmel's impassioned call to arms for support for the work done by WildCRU was unexpected, as was the sheer volume of donations our office has received from the United States and Canada. As of this morning, we have received over 7,000 gifts totaling over $427,000.

Our colleagues in the UK are equally grateful for this incredible generosity of spirit, and we refer back to WildCRU Director David Macdonald's thanks to Cecil supporters around the world: "Thank you: for an organisation that depends on philanthropy we are deeply grateful for this support - it will be a wonderful monument to Cecil the lion if we are empowered by these donations to continue and to increase our conservation work."
